The common bedbug is fast becoming the most worrisome indoor pest of this generation. They can be found in almost any habitable location, with outbreaks in hotels and motel being most newsworthy. Apartment buildings afford near perfect living conditions for bedbugs. Large numbers of occupants live close to one another, and tenant turnover is constant, affording any opportunies for bedbugs to be transported in and / or out on beds, couches, recliners, chairs, furniture, picture frames, etc.
Bedbugs, both adults and nymphs, have been found residing on beds, in furniture such as dressers or nightstands, on floors, walls, behind baseboards, on ceilings, and behind wall mounted mirrors and picture frames. Some of these sites have been several feet from sleeping areas, so it is vitally important to inspect for bedbugs well beyond the bed itself. Young bedbug nymphs are tiny and the eggs are barely noticeable.
The bedbug hides in cracks and crevices during the day, preferring to rest on wood and paper surfaces instead of stone or plaster. It comes out at night to feed on its host, and the meal requires three to ten minutes and usually goes unnoticed by the victim. After feeding, the bite site may become inflamed.
Under ideal conditions bedbug eggs hatch in about seven days and the nymphs molt five times, taking a blood meal between each molt. Development from egg to adult is 21 days and the adult can live for almost a year.

5 Things You Can Do
1) Take notice of yourself and other people in your household who have mysterious bites, welts or unexplained itching.
2) Remove clutter, i.e. Throw away unwanted materials. Bedbugs like wood and like to hide in clutter – clothes on the floor, around bed, etc.
3) Give a thorough inspection to your bedding area: i.e., night tables, bed, dresser and box spring. Look for white to light brown castings (skins) of the bedbugs. Also look for tiny blood droppings on mattress tufts, behind picture frames, and all wooden objects in the bedroom.
4) Communicate with your neighbors to learn the history of your apartment and building.
5) Call AAA Brothers Exterminators if you have any questions and especially if you have any of these symptoms.
4 Things NOT To Do
1) Do Not Panic and move. This will only prolong your problem.
2) Do Not move your bedroom set. Wherever you go the bugs will follow.
3) Do Not bomb or fog your apartment. You will send the bedbugs further into their hiding places, making them much harder to kill.
4) Do Not attempt to treat bedbugs yourself. Chemicals used may be harmful to health if used incorrectly. Additionally, if bedbugs are not thoroughly treated, the situation will not improve and you end up wasting your time and money. Professional exterminators have certified knowledge, DEC approved products that are restricted from public use, and the right mechanical tools to treat your infested property.
10 Things Everyone Should Know
about Bedbugs
Did You Know?
1) Bedbug infestation was common in the United States before World War II. But with improvements in hygiene, and especially the widespread use of DDT during the 1940’s and 50’s, the bedbugs all vanished.
2) Adult bedbugs are about ¼ inch long and reddish brown, with oval, flattened bodies.

3) Another likely sign of bedbugs is rusty or reddish spots of blood on bed sheets, mattresses, or walls.
4) Bedbugs like to hide where they feed.
5) Bedbugs usually bite people at night while they’re sleeping.
6) They feed by piercing the skin with an elongated beak through which they withdraw blood. Engorgement takes about three to ten minutes, yet the person seldom knows they’re being bitten.
7) A common concern with bedbugs is whether they transmit diseases. Although bedbugs can harbor pathogens in their bodies, transmission to humans is highly unlikely.
8) Signs of bedbugs on your body can be itchy red welts, or localized swelling. Symptoms vary with each person.
9) Once bedbugs are introduced, they often spread room to room throughout a building. Unlike cockroaches that feed on filth, the level of cleanliness has little to do with most bedbug infestation.
10) Bedbugs live in almost any crevice or protected locations. Like seams of mattresses, tufts, and bed frames.
